Project Summary
The Low-Tech Studio (LTS) is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Faculties of Science and Applied Sciences, Réjouisciences, Biosphère Expérience and Hellow.coop. The project was initiated by InterAc’t, in collaboration with Biosphère Expérience, with a view to offering a unique immersive experience in Belgium.
The full-scale Studio is equipped with a range of low-tech devices, providing visitors with experiences that are centered around:
-
Water management : this is exemplified by the utilization of a mist shower and live composting toilets ;
-
Energy management: a 12V electrical network is powered by a solar device that has been adapted to function in accordance with sunlight and user needs. The device incorporates a slow-heat solar electric cooker and a rowing washing-machine ;
– Food: well-designed pantry, solar water heater, solar Norwegian pot, local food (mushrooms and insects) - The architectural eco-design encompasses the use of bio-based insulation, the reused materials, and the adoption of modular, demountable, and scalable architectural methods.
The primary objective of the experiment is to raise awareness among a wide audience – citizens, students and teachers, businesses, and organizations – about low-tech devices and lifestyles. The second objective is to study the acceptability of these low-tech devices. To this end, surveys and interviews will be conducted with the public, thank to citizen science and participatory science.
